Should a parent pass down an old mattress to a child?

The question in our headline is one of the most frequently asked questions of The Better Sleep Council, a non profit organization devoted to educating the public about the importance of sleep.

Answer from The Better Sleep Council:

If a mattress is no longer comfortable for you, it’s not good enough for someone else – especially your child. As kids grow, they need supportive and comfortable bedding as well. Be sure your children have enough space to move around comfortably as they grow. In addition, your child’s first “big girl” or “big boy” bed may not provide enough space or comfort for your adolescent.

Ancient History of The Bed

Comfortable, supportive mattresses are something most of us take for granted. We don’t think about how they’ve evolved over time.

Here’s an eye-opening lesson on the bed throughout history and in more modern times. Here’s  something to think about the next time you go to sleep. So lie down and let us tell you a story.

  • 10,000 years ago, in the Neolithic period, people began sleeping on primitive “beds.”
  • 3400 BCE. Egyptian pharaohs discover the benefits of raising a pallet off the earth. King Tutankahmen had a bed of ebony and gold. Common people slept on palm bows heaped in the corner of their home.
  • Roman Empire. First luxury bed. Often decorated with gold, silver or bronze, these beds featured mattresses stuffed with reeds, hay, wool or feathers.
  • Roman Empire. Romans discover the waterbed. The sleeper would recline in a cradle of warm water until drowsy, then be lifted onto an adjacent cradle with a mattress, where they would be rocked to sleep.

Interesting factoid:

Great Bed of Ware.
On display at the Victoria and Albert Museum, it originally measured 18 feet six inches wide by 12 feet long and was elaborately carved and canopied. And could accommodate 68 people.

What are some ways to get a better night’s sleep?

The question in our headline is one of the most frequently asked questions of The Better Sleep Council, a non profit organization devoted to educating the public about the importance of sleep.

Answer from The Better Sleep Council:

A few key things should help. Try going to bed and getting up at the same time every day – even on the weekends. This will help keep your biological clock in sync. Develop a sleep ritual by doing the same things each night just before bed. Parents often establish a routine for their kids, but it can help adults, too. A routine cues the body to settle down for the night. Another hint: Unwind early in the evening so that worries and distractions don’t keep you from getting a good night’s sleep. Finally, create a restful sleep environment – sleep in a cool, quiet, dark room on a comfortable, supportive mattress and foundation – to get your best night’s rest. If you’re sleeping as much as you need, but still find that you’re sleepy during the day, you should consult your doctor to see if you might have a medical condition interfering with your sleep.

Links Between a New Mattress & More Physical Activity

A New Mattress Does a Body Good

More tips on a better night’s sleep:

A survey, conducted by The better Sleep Council reveals that respondents who report getting seven to eight hours of sleep each night (7.5 is optimal) are more likely to be sleeping on a newer mattress (one to four years old). Survey results also show that those sleeping on a newer mattress are significantly more likely to engage in physical activities than those who sleep on older mattresses:

Type of Physical Activity Newer Mattress
(1-4 years old)
Older Mattress
(8-10 years old)
Running 59% 6%
Weights 54% 8%
Aerobics 57% 9%

What’s more, the survey found that 81 percent of Americans report waking up with back, neck or shoulder pain in the past year, with nearly half (46 percent) of respondents reporting that they frequently (at least a few times a month) wake up with these types of pain that limit their physical performance.

But there’s good news for the majority of people suffering with limited mobility due to back and neck pain. According to Dr. Jacobson’s study, published in the Journal of Applied Ergonomics, sleeping on a new mattress can significantly improve sleep quality during the night and reduce physical pain during the day. In fact, when sleeping on new bedding systems, study respondents on average reported significant improvements in:

  • lower back pain (62.8 percent)
  • shoulder pain (62.4 percent)
  • back stiffness (58.4 percent)
  • sleep quality (64.4 percent), and
  • sleep comfort (69.6 percent)

To get the quality sleep you need for a happier, healthier and more productive life, BSC recommends that consumers evaluate their current mattress every 5 — 7 years for optimal comfort and support.

I think I have bed bugs, what do I do to get rid of bed bugs?

The question in our headline is one of the most frequently asked questions of The Better Sleep Council, a non profit organization devoted to educating the public about the importance of sleep.

Answer from The Better Sleep Council:

Bed bug extermination can be difficult, especially when the problem is allowed to persist. During the beginning stages of an infestation, bed bugs tend to congregate in beds and sleeping areas.  If the infestation grows and spreads beyond your bed, eradicating them can be more difficult. If you get bed bugs, it’s prudent to hire a professional exterminator. Professional exterminators know what to look for and have the necessary tools for managing the problem.

Bedding and garments will need to be bagged and laundered at a minimum of 120 °F.  Alternatively you can place clothing, toys, backpacks, shoes, etc. in a dryer set at medium-high heat for 10-20 minutes. The heat will kill all stages of bed bugs, including eggs. If items can’t be laundered and/or run through a clothes dryer, you may be able to disinfest them in trash bags placed outdoors in a hot, sunny location or inside a closed vehicle for at least a day. The internal temperature must reach at least 120 degrees or higher in order to be effective, so if you try this, the fewer items in the bag, the better, so that the heat can penetrate to wherever the bed bugs may be hiding.

Sometimes, it becomes necessary to throw out heavily infested items, but it’s best to consult with a professional before doing so. Mattresses and box springs can often be protected in zippered encasements rather than having to be discarded.

New findings show better sleep linked to improved physical performance.

The following information is provided by The Better Sleep Council:

AMERICANS GET PHYSICAL AFTER A GOOD NIGHT IN BED

While weary, overextended Americans are turning to “quick fixes” like caffeine and performance-enhancing supplements, which claim to improve everything from their daily workout to their sex lives, they are losing sight of what experts say is essential to improved performance: a good night’s sleep.

In fact, according to the 2008 Better Sleep Month (BSM) national survey, sponsored by the Better Sleep Council (BSC):

  • Respondents getting nine hours of sleep or more are more likely to engage in higher-intensity workouts (biking, running, weight lifting, etc.).
  • Seven in 10 (70 percent) report that they are not getting the recommended amount of sleep needed each night (7.5 hours or more) to perform at their best each day.

“Sleep deprivation impacts us physically, which can negatively affect our coordination, agility, mood and energy,” says Dr. Bert Jacobson, professor and head of the School of Educational Studies at Oklahoma State University (OSU) and the lead author of the new study Grouped Comparisons of Sleep Quality for New and Personal Bedding Systems. “Research shows that sleeping better and longer leads to improvements in athletic performance, including faster sprint time, better endurance, lower heart rate, and even improved mood and higher levels of energy during a workout.”

One out of three survey respondents agrees, stating that the best thing about getting a good night’s sleep is improved physical performance.

How do I prevent bed bug infestation?

The question in our headline is one of the most frequently asked questions of The Better Sleep Council, a non profit organization devoted to educating the public about the importance of sleep.

Answer from The Better Sleep Council:

The following precautions can help prevent bed bugs from entering your home:

  • Do not bring curbside items (especially beds and sofas) indoors as these may harboring bed bugs.
  • If you are traveling, make it a habit to inspect your bed for bed bugs before unpacking.  Remove sheets, blankets, etc. and examine  the seams of the mattress and upper edge of the box spring for any signs of bed bugs or their droppings which appear as darkish spotting or staining. The seams and corners at the head of the bed (the pillow end) are especially critical. Although bed bugs often reside behind hotel head boards, these can be heavy and difficult to remove except by trained individuals.
  • Avoid storing your luggage on the floor or bed. Bed bugs are less likely to infest suitcases and other belongings if placed on a table top, luggage stand or other hard surface.
  • When returning home from travel, put all your laundry immediately into the washer or dryer on warm or hot cycle. Either method is effective at killing bed bugs and their eggs. It may also be prudent to store your suitcase in the garage, basement, etc., rather than in living areas of your home.  These precautions are especially important, upon returning home, should you experience bites or suspicious itchy welts during you travels.
  • Some travel sites are now offering advisories on which hotels have reportedly had incidents involving bed bugs. While many of such reports are unconfirmed, they can provide guidance to concerned travelers.

Stop the Spread of Zombie-itis!

Join The Better Sleep Sleep Council’s national campaign to stop the spread of Zombie-itis!

Get rid of the un-slept zombies roaming your town by joining the Better Sleep Council’s campaign to stop the Zombieitis epidemic currently gripping the US.

The “Stop Zombieitis” campaign launched May1 in conjunction with the BSC”s annual Better Sleep Month. Friday, May 2oth was the “Stop Zombieitis! Day”. The buzz is expected to build throughout 2011.

Sleep surveys show that 70% of Americans don’t get the recommended eight hours of sleep at night. In fact, 39% get six hours or less sleep per night…17% get less than five! Sleep deprivation turns normal people into zombies, identified by their unkempt appearance, unsightly drooling, frequent mumbling or moaning, and a lumbering walk or slow gait.

“While we’re taking somewhat of a light-hearted approach with our campaign, sleep deprivation is a very serious health problem,” says BSC Chairman mark Quinn. “It can have a profound impact on a person’s general health, mood, energy level, job performance and overall productivity.”

The causes of Zombieitis are varied, but the BSC’s campaign is raising public awareness that sleeping on old poor quality bedding is a primary cause.”

“Research shows that people who get the recommended eight hours of sleep each night tend to sleep to sleep on newer mattresses,” says Ryan Trainer, president of the International Sleep products Association, which sponsors the BSC.

Bedding Down Mattress, serves the Roaring Fork Valley communities of Aspen, Basalt, Carbondale, and Glenwood Springs, Colorado and they have the cure for “Zombieitis”!

How much sleep do children need?

The question in our headline is one of the most frequently asked questions of The Better Sleep Council, a non profit organization devoted to educating the public about the importance of sleep.

Answer from The Better Sleep Council:

Kids need at least nine hours of sleep each night to be star students. To help make sure your kids get the sleep they need, make sure your child’s bedroom is conducive to a good night’s sleep – your child’s room should be cool, quiet and dark and he or she should be sleeping on a comfortable, supportive mattress.
